What is the deciding factor to pull over a car, per phone call. I have heard "law being called on eratic driving" thus ending in DUI or whatever. But if you call in and report you saw someone selling drugs in plain view at a local store, and tell the description of car, and in some cases the persons name.. no one can do anything about it??A big WTF is up with that?? What if there were 100 pounds of drugs in the trunk. we would never know. We do know that if someone thinks you are swerving while driving you will be pulled over in a matter of minutes. but it seems only on the I-state do we have drugs. And yea I know last friday they got some so dont say it.

Well when someone calls in talking about someones driving you can stopped based on that. Someone calling about reckless driving is resonable suspicion to stop a car. Same with spotting what you see and take in as a drug transactuion. However if I stop a car that has been called in for being all over the road most officers will see if the car is all over the road before stopping someone and explaining why they are being stopped, you know to get a little more evidence under the belt before stopping them I mean how many people are kind and understanding when they have contact with the police. So anyway you stop the car for swerving, the guy just might be reaching for a cd and swereved but you will know the second you make contact with the driver, smell of alcohol, speech combined with any driving you observed. Okay next thing. You stop a car that someone called in selling drugs. Getting consent to search the vehicle to find those pounds of drugs you talking about is another thing. How would you feel if you got stopped and the cop told you someone called and said you were selling drugs and can he search your vehicle. Honestly now you could have some pissed off friend or ex-girlfriend call in. There are alot of different factors in the legal issues of searching a car. I mean we can't just stop and search people jest because. Yes you can stop a car for someone calling in but finding drugs no matter the circumstance is a different ball game. -Son of Elmo

Thanks....I think. So lets see here...if I call in and tell you "so-n-so" is driving(and i know his liscense is revoked lets say) and he isnt "swerving" or drunk, just he doesnt have a liscense,(and he pulls up to his house)30 min later you pull up to house and arrest him because "someone"called...isn't that the same category as the dope call?? but you would follow through with the revoke call. not the dope one?? damm no wonder there are so many drugs in madison...but no liquor. keep up the good work sir.

First of all Son of Elmo does not work for Madison or anywhere near. So the" dang no wonder there are so many drugs in Madison is another issue for the Officers of Madison. And I don't believe that any officer would be pulling up to someones house 30 min after You Saw them on the road and arrest them based on what you claimed to have seen. Now if you called in and told them someone you knew had a suspended license and they caught them behind the wheel, on the road or parked in their driveway, different story.

Well, as for the opening post....
If someone calls in erratic driving, they must give a very good description for an officer to find the vehicle. If the person is still driving erratic, then the officer has all he/she needs to make the stop. If the person is no longer breaking any laws, then the officer has absolutely no reason to detain the person.
People call in drugs all the time; doesn't always mean its true or accurate. Like the driving analogy, it gives officers enough information to observe the person but not necessarily enough information to warrant further contact.

I saw with my own eyes a man get "taken" in for drivin with no liscense(after a call to police said his were revoked) police showed up to his "home" as he was standing in the yard. said someone saw him driving...and took him in. same scene...next day...car came buy to sell drugs. called the law..."we cant do anything about that". take it how you want...i know what i saw, and hear every single dam day and nothing gets done about it. but wait...better wear your seatbelts, and not have tinted windows cus thats where the priorities are. That and making sure noone has an abandoned vehicle in the yard
