If Walmart was a Franchise that could be owned by one of the "Chosen Few" that run this town and county then we would have one. Case in point, new Burger King, Convenience Store and Gas Station, yep we needed another one of those. There is not enough revenue in this town for Walmart to come here or incentive. One of the poorest counties and Florida and falling fast. I have resigned myself to the fact that if I want or need anything I will have to travel to another community to get it. Your right, a few years ago there was revenue and now there isn't.

Madison will be a bankrupt commmunity unable to meet their financial obligations in the near future. Our economic base is shrinking to bare minimal and we are losing people to other towns, cities or states in unheard numbers. We have lost a tremendous amount of money for our tax base over the past few decades. This county is self-destructing before your very eyes: reason: selfish greed on the part of a few individuals and corrupt elected officials.

"That's the way we've always done it ". "That's the way it has always been here ". Heard that one from the white natives before ? Too many times for me yet the same chosen or non threatening people to the few are elected by the majority . I have given up : for me one either stays to oneself or leaves .

3) ...Do you agree that there is plenty of room for positive change in our county? How would you propose people bring about this positive change? Very much so. But, what we as a County need is an economic base, something to keep the large majority of our residents working. As was mentioned in a recent post, Valdosta has grown since the 'good ol' boy' network was dismantled. I have worked in Valdosta, for the City, they still have one of the biggest 'good ol' boy' networks around. What Valdosta has is industry. Look at what Valdosta has as employers, the Dillard’s warehouse, the large trucking/storage warehouses, VSU, the two school systems and the City and County governments. They have a means to keep a large percentage of their population employed, even in these poor economic times were in. It has nothing to do with the local governments, except they have worked with their local Chamber of Commerce to help bring in businesses through tax breaks of various kinds. They withheld impact fees, local property taxes, assisted in recruited employees, etc… That’s what Valdosta has. Change will come when employers come, and yes, the City and County are trying to get them to come, no matter what some believe.

When I graduated from the high school on the hill, we had approximately 100 people in our class. I would be willing to wager over 80% left this place, most never to return. I left, but after several years, I decided to come back and raise my family here and set out to make a living. I have made a living, but it was through hard work and time. I was not giving anything that was not earned. Who are the greedy and the corrupt elected officials? Is that just a BS statement made in a moment of emotion or is that fact? I know most say that anyone that makes money is greedy, but I disagree as a general statement, but corrupt elected officials, I would like to know who they are and we can get them out of office

There was a time in Valdosta when new industry and business was prevented from locating there because wages might be driven up. That began to change in a big way in 1975 and has continued to improve even if it isn't perfect. They have a very active industrial authority, county & city commission and chamber of commerce that is focused on economic development. It is true that change will only come to Madison with economic development. Unfortunately, the de-industrialization of this country has made it even more difficult for communities to attract industry that pays a good wage.
If our county commission, chamber of commerce or other groups have a real plan and are taking solid actions to improve the economy, then I think this should be publicized. The lack of perceived effort along with the continuing economic decline in our area causes great frustration.

Or: 1. Brown nose the right person in a slightly powerful position and convince him to help you scam the locals out of money. 2. Pretend to care about the community, bragging about all the volunteer work you have done even if you haven't. 3. Find a way to blow the taxpayers money on meaningless things legally. 4. Call yourself a non-profit so you can get grants that help support your meaningless things. 5. Plagiarize. 6. Pretend to like anyone that can benefit you financially. 7. Cry like a baby when someone out does you in a legitimate, honest way so people will feel sorry for you. 8. Make a City Commissioner feel sorry for you and give you $500. 9. Attempt to blackmale people to get what you want. 10. Ignore how people can see right through you and repeat 1-9 as a lifestyle. Let 1-9 become your personality. Yeah......this should work.
