Why doesn’t the Board of County Commissioners meet at least once per month at a time when people that work during the day could attend? Every other county around Madison has at least one meeting per month at 6:00 pm or later while the latest that the Madison County Commissioners meets is 4:00 pm. I believe this is wrong and the board should make every reasonable effort to encourage participation from the citizens by holding meetings when more people can attend

I asked the Clerk of the Court Tim Sanders that question. He said that they tried that at one time and less people showed up.
I guess at 4pm the people are still at work and 6pm they are eating or taking care of their families and various duties. This is one reason I film the meetings and post them on my site. That way everyone can fit it into their schedule. I doesn't allow you to have input but you can see what you missed.

Based on the production Madison County received from the commissioners in the past, does it really matter what time they hold their meetings?

I appreciate that the meetings are filmed. I think this is a great service. Also, I greatly respect Tim Sanders. However, I believe that responsible government is government that allows public input. When I have to take a vacation from my job just to provide input to the commission about an issue in which I have interest, then it is not responsible government. Also, I can't believe that every neighboring county can't be wrong to have at least one meeting in the evening. My feeling is that the meetings are held during the day because it is more convenient for the commission and the supporting services within the county government. This is yet another example of very poor county government!

In the Tampa Bay area most of the government entities have one meeting during the month that starts at 6:30 P.M.. Here the officials appear to either be on curfew or they really don't want maximum opportunity for people to attend . With a 6:30 P.M. start if folks don't show up , O.K. , they have at least been given the opportunity & therefore should have no gripe .

The reason I have heard is that the county employees that attend the commission meetings won't have to work much past 5 and incur overtime.

Eleven of the 16 counties in the North Central Region of Florida hold at least one county commission meeting per month at 5:00 pm or later. Contrary to Tim Sander's response, holding the meeting later isn't about the number of people in the room. It is about access to "OUR" government. By the way, I think the last post was correct - many of the people attending our meetings are county employees and not the general public.

I agree the people of Madison should be given an opportunity to attend at least one meeting per month. There has been no real progress in the quality of life in this Madison for decades. You can't keep electing the same officials and expect different results. Madison is what it is...same old officials collecting checks for producing absolutely "minimal" results for citizens of this county.
