Just thinking out loud here. But the voice already has a "Go Local" section. In fact, every page has ad space that any local business can purchase. If a section of TheVoice is dedicated to listing local businesses, and that listing helps them make more money, then it stands to reason that TheVoice should share in the profits. So, why not just buy ad space? John has given up a lot of time to create the on line paper. You can do the math on the ads he does have and wonder how he keeps going. These ads run for a month at the price the local rag runs for one issue. If I had a business, I would run my ad on his site just to support him. Personally I think his prices are so low and so many people check the site every day that any local business should run an on-going ad. If for no other reason but to avoid Madison reverting back to the unbiased, plagiarism paper becoming our only news media.

True MikeK, but it is in various places on the front page. Look at the Classified link, 1 post, link that classified along with business card advertising, local market sales, such as the new one on Hwy 6, garage sale ads. I am not necessarily talking services such as car repair, plumber etc those should be under Services, but the Go Local link would cater to those that need to sell a product such as the new fish market and produce market, gifted artist's that may be in our community that we know nothing about. Anyway it was just a thought to get the word out and available to all that may link themselves up with the Voice to read the "Real News" and may not have any idea or desire to be on these boards.

Oh and I agree with others this does not have to be free to the poster, but a catchy phrase like the Go Local Link may provide an increase in traffic that these LOCAL mom and pop establishments need.

I'm just throwing this out there for the sake of argument.... not that I like arguing... The Madison Florida Voice is a local business. I bet the veggie farmer wouldn't expect to give John tomatoes and mustard greens for free, so I don't see how they can expect ad space for free. Just sayin...

I think it's a great Idea. Maybe do this, give a discounted rate to in county businesses and and higher rate to out of county businesses.

I think it's a great Idea. Maybe do this, give a discounted rate to in county businesses and and higher rate to out of county businesses. Please understand that I'm not arguing against you, but this type of idea comes up a lot in politics. Please forgive my soapbox. What is the underlying purpose of doing something like this? Why discriminate against geography or proximity? If we support better products and service, don't we all benefit in the long run? If we support lesser quality, then don't we all suffer the consequences? It's like an old leadership axiom: "behavior that is rewarded tends to be repeated". Why reward inferior service and why punish success simply because someone lives beyond a certain geographical boundary? I agree that it's a good thing to help out our neighbors but there are many ways to do that, including being honest and straightforward: "look bro, you just can't compete, either go to work for the competition or find a new and better way to do it".

Exactly why i said maybe, good point. Brain fart on my part, as I was stating that in a different post, but got misdirected via a tangent that was started, lol.

Anyone go to the little Mexican restaurant down town? I love that place... nice people, decent food, but mostly nice people. I wonder how their business will do now that a "big" Mexican restaurant is opening up in the old Food For Thought building? It'll be interesting times for the Mexican Madisonian Restaurateurs. How bout Crab Daddys? Isn't that the 15 year old Peacock girl that owns the place? What a great idea! I ate there last night and it was fantastic. There's no other place like it in Madison and she was a darling at the counter. John can be the "Go Local" food critic...
